Single Wicket Cricket in Wiejce, SkwierzynaMay 1st 2005
The long grass and less than flat surface at the Wiejce Palace proved a challenge to most of the Polish batters.
The rather splendid Wiejce Palace Hotel, near Skwierzyna in Poland was the setting for the first Polish outdoor cricket for the new season on Sunday the 1st May 2005. The single wicket competition was organised along the lines of the single wicket competition featured every year in the BBC Radio programme, the Archers, with each batsmen batting for 4 overs each. Five runs were deducted each time the batter was given out. The competition was won by Marcin Szymanek, with 2nd place going to Tomasz Halasz, and 3rd to Simon Haines. The umpire for the contest was Magdalena Pospieszna from Skwierzyna. Polish television filmed part of the game for broadcast on the following day's news. If you'd like to join Polonia Cricket Club at the Wiejce Palace in the future to watch or play some cricket contact us. We will then let you have full details of our next fixture.
