The Cambridge FCE Exam

If you already know something about Cambridge examinations, it is fairly easy to decide if you are ready for FCE. If you have already passed the Cambridge PET exam at World English or elsewhere, you will need about another two years of classes (4 lessons a week!) before you are ready to take FCE. This is an average and how long it takes you will depend on how hard you work, how quickly you learn, etc.
The thing to remember is that FCE is an intermediate/upper intermediate exam. If you are going to pass, you need to be fairly confident about English in all the following areas - reading, writing, listening, grammar, vocabulary and speaking. You need to be able to use and understand the main structures of English and a wide range of vocabulary and be able to communicate with English-speaking people in a range of social situations. Our FCE students are fully prepared in all these areas, and are ready to begin using English at work or for further study.
In addition to classes at World English Language Centre students will find it useful to:
Obtain a good English/English dictionary and a reliable modern reference grammar of English. Your World English teacher will advise you on the most suitable.
An up-to-date translating dictionary (English/Polish)
A radio to listen to English language programmes. In Poland one can listen to BBC world service on short wave. For details of BBC broadcasts, write to The BBC, Bush House, PO Box 76, The Strand, London, WC2 4PH, England (ANGLIA).
Access the BBC website at bbc.co.uk and listen to their webcasts via your computer.
A DVD or video recorder so that you can watch English language films.
English speaking friends to practise with. Make the most of any opportunity to speak to people whose first language is English! But, it is also very helpful to speak English with your friends outside of the classroom. Remember most people who learn English use it to communicate with other people who are also learners.
An English speaking penfriend. Students at World English have their teachers email addresses and are encouraged to keep in regular contact. Our teachers are always available to help with any problems you might have with English or just to exchange views and opinions.
Read magazines, newspapers and stories in English. The major publishers: Oxford, Longman, Penguin publish excellent simplified readers written for foreign learners which will help improve your reading and vocabulary.
